$500 million to rebuild an Ohio coal furnace
The Energy Department put $500 million behind Cleveland-Cliffs in Middletown, Ohio, and the money rebuilds a coal-fired ironmaking furnace. The company had concluded the original project scope no longer made business sense, because customers would not pay a green premium for steel. The Department projects 2,300 jobs protected, and gives no baseline for that. The release does not say whether the money is fresh or an earlier award redirected.
Canadian alcohol, dairy and car duties set for August 22
A proclamation signed August 18 moved the additional duties on Canadian alcohol, dairy and vehicles to 12:01 a.m. eastern on August 22, after a three day pause. It does not give the duty rate, only the 50 percent ceiling the Tariff Act allows, and it directs refunds only where implementation requires them. A later action would supersede it.
Two Pennsylvania power units stay on call through November
The Energy Department ordered PJM Interconnection and Constellation Energy to keep two Eddystone units available from August 23 through November 20. Secretary Chris Wright credits coal, gas and nuclear with carrying the Mid-Atlantic grid through recent heat waves. They were first due to close in May 2025, and the order says nothing about what kept them running since, what it costs, or who pays.
Khanna's family trusts made 5,402 trades in 2025
The trusts moved $165.4 million in buys and sells across the year. Ro Khanna filed the disclosure in August 2026, as he campaigns for a 5 percent wealth tax on California billionaires. He says he has zero say and zero knowledge of the trading, which his father-in-law controls.
TikTok settles a children's privacy case for $400 million
TikTok and ByteDance will pay the Justice Department $400 million to settle allegations that they illegally collected children's information. The Washington Examiner reported the figure on Friday, and no Justice Department release is in hand. The underlying complaint dates to 2024.
